Food Desert

A “Food Desert” is the name sociologists, economists, and nutritionists call a part of town in which the number of markets offering a variety of fresh, affordable foods is meager.  The artist might have had that meaning in mind when making this piece, but she was also thinking of how bleak a grocery store looks when a shopper new to a special diet starts looking for items to put into her cart.  The store starts to look a little alien or dangerous until the dieter gets the hang of preparing food in new ways.

This plate contains patterns of cut stone, punctuated by fused glass pieces erupting from the surface, suggesting an endless, parched land of oddities.  The artist shaped the pieces of glass in a kiln, and she hand-cut each stone in the design.
