The Olden Days
A trip back in time- priceless. Here is what family vacation meant in central Texas one hundred years ago: brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, second cousins, grandparents, and great-grandparents hitched up the horses and mules for the 20-mile trip to the most scenic river spot imaginable. Cookware, bonnets, swim dresses, and a canoe, all piled into the wagons and carted to the camp spot. Ah….. a break from the daily routine of ranch life!

Beautiful pictures. We tend to think that these farmers and ranchers lived hard lives 100 years ago. But I bet they didn’t feel life was hard, unless crops failed or illness sweep the community. We have more physical comfort now, but our lives are hard in other ways. Think about the level of crime we face. 100 years ago, most ranch houses had no locks on the doors. Is it an advancement to get air-conditioning while giving up the tight knit sense of community that existerd back then? And 100 years ago there were no fire ants in Texas!
Are any of the Dodgens from Pickens County, SC?
Audrey, I believe it must be a different family- perhaps distantly-related, but no direct connection that I know.
Audrey, there are no relatives in SC to my knowledge. Also, I don’t have a record of any spellings with the ‘s’ at the end of the name. Of course, at some point, everyone with any variant spelling is related in some way.
