Carver Museum Gallery Opening in Austin, Texas
April 22 was the opening night for the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center’s 2010 “100%” art gallery and silent auction. Every 12″ x 12″ piece of art work is for sale through the silent auction process, until May 31. The proceeds benefit the museum’s educational programs.
I donated a mosaic called “Connection” for the auction. The youngest donor was a girl of about 10 years; the oldest was (who knows?) in her 80’s. There are professional artists in the bunch, highly skilled hobbyists, and those who are well-known in the community, but who claim no artistic ability at all. My mom, who is herself 93, became inspired to make a wall hanging out of ceramic for next year’s show.
Bob Jones, the exhibit’s coordinator, placed the art on the walls in such a way that the arrangement itself became art.
Here are a few pictures from the opening last Thursday:
12×12: a very interesting premise for an exhibit/auction and it’s a cool look on the gallery wall.
Do wish you’d include a full frame of your mosaic..would love to see.
Hi, Iona. You may see a full-frame of my mosaic here: http://lynnbridge.wordpress.com/2010/04/02/new-contribution-to-a-museum-fund-raiser/. I really hope the museum makes some significant money from this auction. This sort of thing isn’t usually a big money-raiser, but at least it increases the profile of the institution in the community. I don’t know about where you live, but here, one side of the interstate has a significant African-American population and the other side has a significant Anglo population (other ethnicities are spread through the city), and lots of people rarely cross the line and get out of their own zone. I’d like to change that!
Lynne, looks like a fun reception. I love your work!
oops, sorry, that was me that left the above message! Now we know why I’m taking a blog course…I’m pretty illiterate when it comes to the computer!
Hahaha- we’re all in the same boat, Susan, and we’re rowing like mad. Thanks for stopping by!
